Research On Policy Debate At The NFL Tournaments

NFL tournaments are speech art competitions organized for secondary school students. National forensic League is a non profit, non partisan youth organization. The main goal of the league is to encourage secondary school students in matters of speech . College scholarships are offered as a form of motivation to winners in the competition. Aspects of speech art vary from debate, public speaking, oral interpretation of poems or short stories and other literature among other aspects of speech art. The NFL is a key organizer in high school debate competitions, contests and tournaments

The National forensic league boasts of a membership base that run to over a million members globally. All members of National Forensic League must abide to the NFL code of honor which consists of five tenets. These tenets include: service, integrity, leadership, humility and respect. On approval from their principal and payment of all the associated fees, students in private and public secondary schools can become members of NFL.

Students can earn points each time they participate in speech contest, student congress, community speaking and interscholastic debate. National Forensic League also grants degrees that are based on points that an individual student earns. The points can also determine how many students a given secondary school can field at the NFL tournaments or competitions in the years presiding.

Some of the degrees awarded by the NFL include; Degree of merit which is secured on attaining twenty five points; Degree of honor which is awarded if a participant attains seventy five points; Degree of excellence which is awarded on attaining one hundred and fifty points; The degree of distinction which is awarded on attaining two hundred and fifty points; Special distinction degree awarded on attaining five hundred points and the outstanding distinction degree which is awarded on attaining one thousand points.

The League is very keen on empowering young people who are in secondary schools to become ethical individuals, critical thinkers, effective communicators and leaders of a society that is democratic . This are the values encrypted in the National Forensic League mission statement. NFL seeks to increase public awareness in matters relating to debate, public speaking and other speech forms. It does this by organizing contests, completion and tournaments that are carried out countrywide

Students who win these contests are entitled to over 0,000 in college scholarship as prize money. This acts a as a motivation tool to participating pupils. The organization boast of both lifelong members and high school members, only secondary school students can participate in the competitions.

The first national speech tournament was held in nineteen thirty one, ever since that time the tournament has been going on continuously. The only time that the tournament did not materialize was in the world war two years. Contestants in these competitions participate in original oratory, prose reading, poetry reading, story telling, value debate, public forums, and policy debate among other speech competitions.

The NFL tournaments are carried out at district, state and national levels. Points acquired at the district or state level catapult participants to the national contest. Apart from the points acquired during contest, members can also garner in service points. Example, if a contestant was to deliver a speech to twenty five or more adults, he would accrue twenty five service points.
